Australia & India building water security together

5 June 2020

Australia and India will deepen policy and technical cooperation to improve water management and sustainable economic development through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) announced on Water Resources Management.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison and India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi have agreed to elevate the bilateral relationship to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

This MoU enhances Australia and India’s economic development, trade opportunities, and environmental management.

“Water scarcity and water security cut across so much of our bilateral cooperation with India,” Minister for Water Keith Pitt said.

“Australia and India have been formally collaborating on water management since 2009.

“Our relationship reflects the high value we both place on water security for our communities, economies and environments.

“Our partnerships on important state water projects have accelerated in recent years.

“We’ve built trust and commitment over those years to advance our shared water interests.

“On extending this MoU, we’ll be focusing on river basin planning, groundwater management, irrigation efficiency and water sensitive urban design.

“I’m pleased we can share skills and experience between Australia and India as we both improve our water use across sectors from agriculture to city planning.

“Water cooperation will also create opportunities for the private sector to develop management systems on the ground where they’re most effective.

“Our work together will help to advance the Sustainable Development Goal of ensuring the availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.”
